Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta, which has got a 60 years plus record in educational field, is a prestigious and well-known higher education institution in the hilly district of Pathanamthitta. The college, established in 1952, spread the light of knowledge to many irrespective of religion, region or social statuses. The college was the main educational source to almost all especially children of people who were mainly agriculturists and low-income personnel during the time it came into being.
The college was founded by the late Catholicos Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II. The college was envisaged and dreamed of, by the Late lamented Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos (Puthekavil Thirumeni) who worked hard to make it a possibility. With his contacts, thirumeni did the required in official circles as well as he did shed his sweat physically to convert a hilly terrain to the presently beautiful hillock to house the college which many even in their middle-ages, consider as their 'second home'. The primary idea was to start the Catholicate School and with all it's facilities raised the same to a college later on, after the Government authorities give the approving green signal. Though Puthenkavil thirumeni could not see his dream bloom to it's fullness, the college came into being after an year of his leaving this world, in 1952. The college was inaugurated by the then king of Thriuvithamkore, Rajapramukh Sree Cithira Thirunaal Raja. Late lamented Daniel Mar Philoxenos Metropolitan, became the first Principal of the college. Ever since it's inception, the college had grown beyond bounds and limits and is currently a top-ranked college in the area and amongst the colleges affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, basking in glory as a B++ grade college owned by Malankara Orthodox Church. The college also belongs to the first group of colleges in Kerala to receive academic accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college has the mission statement "An educated, enlightened society for a brave new world". The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
The college had more than 2,000 students. It has got more than 100 experienced and well-versed teaching faculty members and an equal number of supporting administrative staff in its rolls. There are degree courses in English, Malayalam, Hindi, Economics, History, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Commerce. The college also has research facilities in the Departments of Malayalam, Hindi, Zoology, Botany, Physics & Mathematics. The College also has a study center of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). N.S.S., Bhoomitrasena club and staff club of the college donates houses to the poor and indulge in many humanitarian projects in and around the locality and district. The Social service league of the college installed Mar Philoxenos Heart foundation for heart operation of poor children. The college was awarded the Best college state award from Government of Kerala for motivating students for blood donation. The college also got Best college award from Corporate management of MOC colleges for its overall performance.

Physics department has two US based student chapters 1.S P I E (Society of Photo optical Instrumentation Engineers) 2.O.S.A (Optical society of America) The college has got a B++ accreditation from NAAC (As per revision in 2006).
It was an everlasting dream of many employed in Kuwait and were successful in their lives starting their educational foundation from the college, to have an Alumni association in Kuwait. It finally got fulfilled when L. L. Philippose Mar Eusebios officially inaugurated the Catholicate College Alumni Association, Kuwait on April 20, 2001. Ever since it's formation, the Alumni had increased in number and had reached a membership strength of 250 plus identified and actively participating members. The Alumni as you can browse through the pages had accomplished a lot, contributing in various means extending helping hands to those students in financial need, support the college in needs related to special occasions etc. Scholarships were also instituted for encouraging students who are brighter prospects in terms of studies.
